Malta Expats | Maltese Feasts Calendar 2018

Given the Maltese passion for feasts and pageantry, every parish celebrates the feast day of its local patron saint. The festivities – colorful parades with brass bands and firework displays – last several days. The final day of the festa sees the life-size statue of the saint being carried through the village streets. To witness a local festival it is best to visit Malta between June and end-September. Feasts that do not occur on a public holiday are celebrated on the weekend before or after the saint’s feast day.

On the feast day itself, several masses are said in church. A mass that includes music and a special sermon about the virtues of the saint is said in the morning. In the evening, the most important external event takes place. This is the procession with the saint’s statue through the streets and squares of the locality. The rejoicement reaches its peak when the statue is about to re-enter the church. At this point, the square in front of the church is full of people singing, clapping, praying and watching the fireworks display. This popular emotional expression of happiness is call ‘briju’. Some say it is ‘in their blood’ to celebrate with all this pomp and gaiety.
